I just was wondering how much the quantity of stellar mass (still burning hydrogen) has changed since its formation, from the different parts of our galaxy: disk, halo, bulge, solar neighborhood.
Some stars explode but they are the fewest, some others interact but they are the fewest - is this correct?

Very briefly, aren't most stars low luminosity dwarfs?
More directly, I think the MW (and most large galaxies) is considered to be the product of many past galactic mergers - galactic interactions would certainly affect star creation and especially the number of stars in the resulting merged galaxy...
