How can I measure MMP-1 protein activity or protein level from liver tissue?

Instead of checking only the mRNA level, I want to check the active protein level of MMP-1 in Liver tissue from mice. How can I do that?

Besides the two publications listed at SCBT site (one of them shows immunohistochemical staining in spinal cord), a more recent article shows it is working in tumors. http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0166553 (figure 6a). This does not answer your question, and hopefully can add a bit to your consideration.
