I am looking to acquire a FORTRAN compiler for UMAT writing (for ABAQUS simulation). I don't have the intel fortran compiler and don't have the luxury to buy it for $899. So, I am looking for other fortran compilers. If anyone has any information please let me know.
GFortran with cmake compiler. But this indeed requires the change of system environment variables.
GFortran and GNU compiler set works with Abaqus if the system environment variables are set properly. According to my personal experience, this worked fine 90% of my studies. However, there had been several occasions I had unexpected results (such as divergence of a simulation which works fine with IFort) or crashes during the simulations. So, I suggest using the officially supported set of operating system, compiler and Abaqus if you don`t want trouble. But, if there is no option GFortran works fine for most of the cases.

Don`t forget Intel Fortran compiler for Linux is free for non-profit academic uses. I guess you don`t need to look for another alternative if you are working on a non-profit project.
I think for writing and compiling Fortran these free compilers are enough. But to run UMAT in Abaqus, you need to use Intel Fortran compiler for Windows and its not free. But its not that costly too. You can always ask your supervisor to pay for it and I am sure it is less than $100.

Check first that ABAQUS supports any of the free compilers available. For example you can not use gfortran with ANSYS CFX on the Windows platform despite the fact that the solver is written in FORTRAN!
gfortran is very popular and is a robust compiler.

The Watcom FORTRAN compiler is readily available on the www. You need to specify what OS you intend to target before looking for any compiler.

There is no requirement to use the Intel compiler, with a couple of more steps, the GNU Fortran compiler can be linked to ABAQUS:
