There is a reduction in fertility of my corn borer cultures and I think it caused by antibiotics in larval diets.
Which groups of antibiotics are safer to use in such diets? Do they differ according to species? How dose-sensitive are they?
Dear Alican,
The following antibacterials are safe for use:
Amoxicillin in combination with clavulanic acid, ampicillin, streptomycin and chlortetracycline.
Hoping this will be helpful,
Rafik
Thanks. Can you recommend any resource?
You can purchase tablets or capsule from the pharmacy for most of the indicated drugs.
No, I mean literature! Thanks anyway...
Fertility is affected by other factors too
How old is your breeding stock??
Do you select the insects for breeding in the colony? if you do, you may be the driving force behind the change.
do you know how strong is the relationship body size-fecundity in females at your colony???
among others
There are some reviews on reproductive potential in insects
Hope it helps
