We make our own agar here and I've been experimenting with different indicators. So far, methyl green works ok but I've found that it does suppress growth. Currently we don't use an indicator and pour HCl over the incubated plate to visualise clearing. I'd really like DNase agar plates that give obvious results and don't require HCl as we also use these in practicals for students.

I'm a bit surprised you are finding growth inhibition with methyl green. My lab used methyl green DNase agar for years without any problem nor any noticeable growth defect. You might double check your recipe and perhaps your methyl green stock. We did occasionally make our own plates but found we had much better results using commercial DNase test agar.
We also used toluidine blue as well but found the methyl green gave much clearer results.
Michael J. Benedik thanks for your response! I wasn't expecting inhibition either but I work in a university lab so the methyl green powder could be a bit old. You wouldn't happen to remember the recipe you've used by any chance?
we used 80mg/l of methyl green for plates, added to DNAse Test Agar that we bought commercially.
