I've used the SET MXLOOPS command in SPSS to avoid getting MXLOOPS trip warnings but have found that the processing speed has massively slowed down. Has anyone else encountered this problem? If so, any suggestions for making my syntax more efficient would be much appreciated.

Although I'm not an SPSS user for quite a long time, as far as I remember SET MXLOOPS command should be used to prevent infinite loops. So, in this regard, maybe you should try to set the value to a smaller number, say 5 or 10, instead of default value 40? Hope this helps.

Thanks for your suggestion. I'd found a couple of articles that advised increasing the SET MXLOOPS value so have tried both approaches. Reducing the value didn't stop the warnings, while increasing it did but reduced the processor speed substantially (i.e. taking 20 minutes to run rather than seconds!).
The command still does what I wanted it to do (remove a space from the middle of string variable) despite the MXLOOPS trips, so I am just planning to live with the warnings for the time being!
