I would like to deposit iron from the commercial e-beam evaporator, in UHV, but I can get no emission current, fhile flux monitor shows negative flux in the range of nA. I would guess, this is the current of electrons reaching the flux monitor. The vacuum does not react much either. The geometry of the source is simple - it's iron rod, to which high positive potential is applied, and a round-shaped filament close to the end of the rod. The filament is grounded through the source. I have checked all (?) possible electrical connections, it is all fine (connected where it should be, and open loop where there should be no connection). Why I cannot get any emission current (hence no evaporant flux)? Might that be, that the iron rod is so oxidized, that the surface oxide layer does not allow the emission current? (might be a ridiculous suggestion, but I am confused) I would never thought that I'll be asking this kind of question, since I have quite an experience with these evaporators myself, but now I am a little lost:) Any suggestions?

PS of course, obvious answer would be "there is no rod" - but this requires venting the chamber which I'd try to avoid...
