I have come across lots of non-linear stability measures used in fall prediction of the elderly, however these all require a large volume of gait cycles. Has anybody come across gait stability measures which can be used on say 5-10 gait cycles? I'm also interested in stabiltiy measures which utilise kinetic information. Thanks.

Nonlinear methods of quantifying dynamic stability usually require large amount of data. However, a method based on inverted pendulum model such as Extrapolated center of mass (margin of stability) might be an alternative. I have not used it, but you can find out more on it in dr. Bruijn's phd thesis: " is stability an unstable concept?".

Indeed, as Sina points out, a lot of measures are mentioned in my thesis. However, most of that is also published, and the best article to get you started would be this one :"Assessing the stability of human locomotion: a review of current measures.
Bruijn SM, Meijer OG, Beek PJ, van Dieën JH.
J R Soc Interface. 2013 Mar 20;10(83):20120999.". It's also online here on researchgate. In it, you will read that it's also possible to use short data series for these stability analysis. For this, I would highly recommend the work of Kim van Schooten.

We published some articles about this topics. The most recent one (June 2014) shows that 70 steps (the average of 2 tests of 35 steps) could be sufficient to assess gait instability in patients exhibiting neurological disorders:

Dr. Gerald F. Harris of Marquette University is a notable authority on gait analysis. I worked with him about 20 years ago in the context of pediatric patients at Shriners Hospital. My involvement only concerned close-range photogrammetry.

Normally you should use a larger number of gait cycles in order to predict and generalize. I would say, depending on the environmental setup, that a number of 5-10 cycles would be alright.. Good luck.

"Insights into gait disorders: Walking variability using phase plot analysis, Huntington's disease" by P. Esser, H. Dawes, J. Collett, and K. Howells (2014)
Using a phase plot gait variability analysis of the estimated center of mass motion, they could reliably differentiate between conditions over a 10m walk. The reliability and robustness of this method, however, still requires further research. Hope this helps.
