My own informal meetings with microfinance borrowers indicates that they think its tremendous and they treat the MFI agents as angels 'farishta'. But there are many researchers who feel it leads to overindebtedness. Look for works by Isabelle Guérin and co-authors.

It used secondary data. Just google Microfnance and sucides and ssrn and you'll get the paper. The main problem with primary data is a strong failure bias...you can interview only those who failed in their attempt.

Since I am working on a slightly different topic... Impact of Financial Inclusion Initiatives on Beneficiaries... and to study the Impact I am taking the beneficiaries randomly to analyse the impact of Access to Finance on them..

No doubt there is always some kind of bias or perils involved while collecting primary data... I am trying to reduce them to the extent possible...

I am writing my thesis on a similar topic, my research on financial inclusiveness indicates that, the current approach is not helping to mitigate poverty among the poor because of the high interest which results to many unintended consequences. I set up a pilot project with 36 women, gave them some loans at an interest rate of 12%. My idea is to come out with some findings and policy recommendations involving many stakeholders to increase the supply side without transfering the cost of capital to the poor as interest. I am current analysing the data from 881 respondents from Ghana to finish my research.

I have some solutions and innovative policies to mitigate poverty. Poverty is an experience and unmasking the individuals experiences always provide solutions. Let us avoid politicking poverty because the elite uses their wealth to rule people experiencing poverty. The elite never intend to let people experiencing poverty to become better because the elite will lose their grips of controlling.
