In a study on transnational family practices of refugees in Germany we think about adapting the relevance of smartphone use in our sample and collect data by a survey which is made available in an app. Has anybody experience with this way of data collection or knows helpful publications? What do we have to think of?

Current technology, such as smartphones and “apps”, allows time-use research to be set up in a completely different way. People usually carry their smartphone with them throughout the day, using it regularly. This means people can be reached more easily and in addition to survey questions additional data about the respondent can be collected.

You have to anticipate how you will generalize the results across the sampling frame - the refugees in Germany. Some refugees may not have a smartphone and some who have may not download the app.

Other elements to consider is the capability of the data collection app to function without and internet connection, or offline, and if your study includes sensitive or identifiable information that the platform you choose is secure.
