We know that plants are also studied through MRI in addition to animals. We have a lot of reported materials dealing with enhancement of contrast of clinical/animal MRI. Is there any contrast agent developed which can be used as contrast agent for plant MRI?

was given to cress. The researchers wanted to
find out whether the contrast agent could
pollute the environment and find its way
into the food chain. They administered the
gadolinium as a chelate.

There was a paper back in the 80"s (I think in Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, or J. Magn. Reson., but I could be wrong), in which a Halogenated-hydrocarbon was injected into a pepper. The proton image showed the structure of the pepper, the image obtained of the halogen showed the seeds. The theory being that the compound was absorbed by lipid-rich tissue.
In addition to the Gd work cited above (and other similar papers), the use of hyper-polarized water has been proposed, although I am not sure this has been realized.

There have been a number of compounds used as X-ray contrast in plants and seeds, some of them might also work for MR.
