Hi everybody,

Up to know, the Inter-cell handover of the RN is not supported. (36300- [4.7]). The TR 38.874 rel 15 focus on IAB (relay node in 5G) with physically fixed relays.

I am studying the case of a relay node in a moving platform (aircraft, vessel, train) with a satellite link as backhauling.

People in a plane for example are connected to a Relay node in the plane. This relay node is connected to a donor gNB (5G eNB) through a satellite link. this implies few things:

  • single beam satellite: the plane fly all over the world but stays connected at the same satellite ground GW. The RN then remains connected to the same AMF. The UE is located in the same TAI even if it moved from New York to Hong Kong.
  • Multibeam satellite: the plane changes of beam which implies the change of satellite ground GW.

I have few questions:

  • When a source gNB decides the Handover (HO), it sends a request to the target gNB and start a timer called Trelocprep. Couldn't find any value for this timer. Is there a standard value for it? Knowing the satellite latencies, a handover could be particularly difficult if this timer (and Trelocoverall) are not configurable
  • even if we push the possibility of a RN handover to the 3GPP standards, how can this handover be possible? It will be a S1 interface handover as the link between the two gNB can't exist because of the distance. Even if the RN HO is complete, what is going to happen to all the UE that are under this RN (TAI, etc..)
  • Does someone who studied the Relay Node approach in moving platform can give me a hint ?

    Thanks
