Could you please tell if this is freshwater or marine and were it is collected? It would help in identication although many Amphipods require detailed studies of for instance the Gnathopods. So a detailed photo of the front legs of the specimen top left (male) would also help.
Hi Ton, this is marine amphipod (tropical water in Sabah, Malaysia). The biggest I found is 1cm body length (not included antennae). I found them in my seagrass nursery tank with overflow system and they grazing on seagrass. They built nest using seagrass pieces, bind 2 leaves together or other materials even seaweed.
Only brown colour one have 2 pair bigger claws like attached picture. Sorry do not have better resolution picture. Thanks alot for your help.
for me it seems to be an aorid species, e.g. the genera Microdeutopus and Grandidierella are belonging to it. You can check the comprehensive books of Barnard (for Australian species). For Indian Ocean or Indo-Pacific no key books exist, but several single papers dealing with families for instance (e.g. Conlan & Bousfield-1982-The Superfamily Corophioidea in the North Pacific Region... and Myers-1980-A CLADISTIC AND BIOGEOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF THE AORINAE SUBFAMILY NOV)
