I'm in the excellent position of having a vast ebook library at my hands from which I can get almost any book I would desire. Besides from a lot of medical publications I would also like to download a standard textbook for statistics. My scope is a biomedical one but I would really love to learn proper statistical methods.
I have already started to invest time into learning R. It would be great if someone could recommend an understandable book for a medical student that still is somewhat accurate.
Any suggestions?
Along with the other excellent suggestions above, another great book with a biomedical emphasis is 'Biostatistics: The Bare Essentials' by Norman & Streiner (now in it's 3rd edition, I think). As well, as providing clear explanations and covering most of the statistical procedures that you will see in the biomedical literature, it is also very humorous... :-) For R, I found 'The Art of R Programming' a helpful companion when I was getting started. Also, you might consider subscribing to http://www.r-bloggers.com/ , where you'll see lots of very clever ways people have used R. Good luck!

If you are a starter with Statistics, this book may be helpful to you - STATISTICS IN BIOLOGY AND PSYCHOLOGY by Prof. Debajyoti Das and Prof. Arati Das. It is a basic book and sufficient for biology oriented application of Statistics.
The R Book and Statistics: An Introduction Using R both by Michael J Crawley are very good books.

I recomend this one Chossing and using statistics: a biologists guide by Calvin Dytham.
I like it because it has a useful key on how to chose the most appropriate stats for the data and because it tells you how to carry out the stats in different programs such as SPPS and R. There may even be a medical equivelent.
I find chosing the test the most difficult thing when it comes to stats!!
I recommend "Statistical Methods: The Geometric Approach" by Saville and Wood. This book illustrates the methods used in statistics using Geometry. The authors write that "R.A. Fisher was an astute geometer and derived inspiration from thinking in pictures," and "the book aims to retrieve Fisher's lost insight, and to present it in a dish palatable to all and even delicious to many". It requires that one has some basic vector geometry and an has seen an introductory statistics course.
The one that I find to be the most easy to understand, short and with the enough sustance to comprehend the use of the subject in life sciences is, by far "Principles of biostatistics" by Marcello Pagano...
My favorite by far is Biometry: The Principles and Practices of Statistics in Biological Research. Rigorous enough to be useful (many 'biology" statistics books lack in rigor), with plenty of well-documented examples.

I just ordered both Med Stats at a Glance and Biostatistics the Bare Essentials. I browsed them both on Amazon and saw nuggets I liked. I've also got "The BUGS book" and Borenstein's "Introduction to Meta Analysis" I'm currently working through. Am I conscientious or just compulsive?
