I am conducting an experiment on removal of heavy metals from industrial wastewater using chitosan modified activated carbon. I'm faced with a challenge of getting mechanical/rotary shaker. Please can i use low-speed centrifuge instead of the mechanical shaker in the adsorption experiment?
You can't,
Because the centrifuge move in one direction and the Adsorbent will separate from solution, in addition you need constant temperature.
Centrifuge is not a mixer, it is a separator! For large particle such as activated carbon, the separation will happen in seconds, and your effective mass transfer area would drop drastically after first few second. So, the results you obtain in a centrifuge and in a static tube may not be very different. As for your experiments, if you are not interested in kinetics, but the objective is to study capacity, mixing is not crucial. Long experiments with some manual mixing (of course with some trial experiments) may get you some reasonable data.
No, you cannot use a centrifuge as a mixer because your adsorbent will be separated from the solution. Other than a shaker, you may want to try a magnetic stirrer with magnetic stirring bars.
if you don't have magnetic stirrer you can make stirrer by simple thing (look to YouTube OR use your idea).
