Amina,

Shell modell is always 2D. It is not about geometry , but about equations.

So, answering your question, yes it is ok to apply a load to nodes.

For example you can use SF,ALL,PRESS,P command to selected nodes and apply normal stress with P intensivity.

gfrp nodes & concrete nodes are at same location, while gfrp also has 5mm thickness (below the plane of selected nodes) , still there is no issue if I only select gfrp nodes & apply boundary condition?

Aamina, if you have two sides at the same location then something is not right. Usually this situation appears for contact problem and there you use contact elements or in situation when you use coupled degrees of freedom. In your case i believe you should use the same nodes for concrete and gfrp elements. You can browse ESURF command and learn how you can use it for contact elements. The technique will be the same.

I was working with metal reinforcement for concrete structures and used the same bodies both for concrete and reinforcement

now sir i have attached pictures of my model.

i have to consider contact as there is slippage between two materials. so using friction model.

gfrp tube is modelled as shell 181 sectype define with top plane or bottom plane (no mid plane) . please see contact & eshape-on image for x-section of quarter beam.

i have applied load to only gfrp nodes as shown is fig, (although conc nodes are also at same location) & the deformed shape is not correct, load is not transferred to concrete. how can i model gfrp as shell such that load is applied to gfrp & then transferred to concrete.

This fact means that you have uncoupled geometry.

Can you share the way how you created geometry?

Did you create parallelepiped first for concrete and then additional planes for gfrp?

Try following steps:

1. create parallelepiped volume

2. set the element type, material and properties for concrete

3. mesh thr volume

4. set the element type, material and properties for concrete

5. select planes of the volume that you want to reinforce with grfp

6. use ESURF to create gfrp shell elements.

In this case you will have comon nodes for the voulme and the shell therefore the deformation will be coupled.

i created geometry this way

1. first define ET solid65 & shell 181

2. define material properties of both materials & secdata for mat ID 2 for each layer

3. create keypoints for areas & set area attributes for shell 181, then mesh

4. merge gfrp shell nodes

5. create volume by block & set its attributes & mesh

6. now check the plane to be set for gfrp shell (top plane or bottom plane) by activating Eshape

7. select gfrp nodes & set boundary conditions & define symmetric planes

8. make contact pairs using contact manager

9. apply load, set sol n cntrl ,, solve

contact pair was created by using contact manager. target is area of concrete & contact is area of gfrp,, node to surface contact is established

My deformed shape if i take perfect bond by using merge nodes command. this is right, which means contact is not formed correctly.

what am i doing wrong in contact

sir i just changed my contact type from standard to no separation & the solution converged & deformed shape is also fine. but no separation is not preferred as after crack concrete will be separated from gfrp.

suggest type of bond please.
