Generation Y came after Generation X. Generation Y covers people born between the 1980’s and the year 2000, and these individuals are sometimes referred to as Gen Y, the Millennial Generation, or simply Millennials. Here, we reached the stage of having personal computers in the home around 1995, so our teenagers are Gen Y, not Z.  It is the environment that has provided more exposure to hi tech devices, that has shaped certain interests in children.  Our Gen Y are concerned about their devices, and are computer savvy.  But they are often multitasking, and less focused on certain tasks.  I was informed that Gen Z is more focused than Gen Y.  Whatever Gen we are we must place importance on human values and family.  Thanks.

I think RG questions’ popularity has no connection with their importance, point of interest or actuality. Many people answer easily approachable questions which do not need thinking, analysis or some extra work. Another side of the situation, many avoid threads on delicate issues. Miranda is right. One can characterise a “digital”, computer educated or device dependent generation. Some of them recognised that the new digital devices only help to think but most of them, mainly the ordinary populace became functional illiterates. For these people efforts, culture, ethics, tasks do not exists but their personnel wishes and interests.  Unfortunately, I have no statistical data supporting this virtually strange view.   

Always Prof Peter has an excited questions, I am following the question to follow take a look on answers.

What I can compare with regard to different generations is the difference in the relationship I experienced in my research work. My both A in my early work years was born in the middle of 1920s; I, referred here as B, was born in the middle of 1930s; and one of my younger colleague C in my later work years was born in the late 1940s. The relationship between A and B was like the master-servant relationship, and the relationship between B and C was like friends. I suppose such a large difference in the relationships between research coworkers of different generations are not seen in recent years.

I do not like consolidation into a lump sum. People were very different and they are today.

In a scientific view, the population mean may have changed. But especially in personal contact like e.g. relatives, teachers, pupils I have to see the unique counterpart.

In times of adolescence and self-finding people may like it, but I myself do not want to be seen as a part of a cluster.

I think the issue is not that younger generations can learn from the mistakes and performance of the formers but what they really have learned.   The timely relationship is another question.

I think the most important thing may be when these generations can turn their learnings into efficiency. As I can assess the environment protecting generation has not been able to turn its learnings into efficiency.

'Being a child born in the 60,s I think that generations y and z whilst they have grown up in a technologically sophisticated environment have missed out on the simple life experiences on offer in the world around us. While we were happy to embrace life enjoy nature and enjoy a genteel approach to life than mgs have k bed much faster for the next generation of young people. Everything has to happen now immediately the art of patience is lost as time has no meaning children can't wait to grow up they don't live got the current moment but rather the moment in the future they are impatient with each other with technology with travel it has to be sooner bigger and faster to have meaning for them. They see older people's ideas as old outraged and irrelevant. Rather than learning from past mistakes they want to blunder ahead and make even greater mistakes. Rather than rectifying earlir mistakes and take ng learning from it they continue to build on our mistakes and make mountains out of what we're once mole hills. When instead they could repair and refine or rebuild better they use the poor foundation as grounds to continue in the same vein as those before. Instead of realising that x and y got it wrong generation z will  continue to get it Wong unless they sit back and examine what private r generations have done or failed to do and come up with an action plan.

I am not a fan of clustering  of humans/societies.  I  strongly believe we are different because it is based on our  thinking partially overloaded by society (as Socrates said: I cannot teach anybody anything only make them think !!!) 

Personally , I do not like to voice my opinions in public (forums) not because I am  scared only they are my views. As far as technicality is concerned I am ok being right/wrong/skewed/criticized/lop-sided ...

Coming to people in hierarchy , I strongly believe no matter what age they are in , to grow and learn takes courage and I guess majority lack this simple characteristics. I TRY ... 

I volunteer with kids and at my age if I can still giggle with teenage kids whom I tutor- Math and science, I guess I have blurred the differentiating parameter.

This is interesting.

I don't much believe in "generation gaps". When we accept the differences, when we try to understand, even if it gets difficult to understand strange behaviours that don't easily adapt our personal standards, then we may be able to help in a better way. Generation Z will adapt, somehow, someday. We just have to stand by and offer our hand with respect.

"Generation gap" is not necessarily a bad  thing. It is simply a way to describe, in short, the differences in humans, that result from all the changes in the environment/society and that are inevitable; from clothing and language (external visible) to attitudes, values, norms (internal). It is the younger generation(s) that then create a new society (so to speak).

When you speak of strange behaviors and adapting to our personal standards, what comes to mind is the rebel teens, again, not necessarily a bad thing, as it could be just young people who encounter something they do not like and want to change it. Here is US, the 50s come to mind and the turbulent 60s, which were necessary for the drastic changes that were needed for a better, less repressed restrictive and unjust society.

In my experience, one thing about young people is their lack of understanding and acceptance that their parents and professors DO know more than they do, after all, they have have many more years to accumulate knowledge. It is great that they express their thoughts and opinions, but I am referring here to actual knowledge of facts. They express themselves w/o knowledge or facts (history, science, etc.).

There will be a rapid raise in next generation people demand on innovation in life sciences, whatever is easily practical by human beings needs to facilitated in the later period to come (due to sedentary life style and new age diseases)

Thanks, Peter. I have a problem with how people are identifying the generations. The definitions I've always seen are boomers (the children of WW II era parents), then Gen X, then Gen Y (also known as Millennials), and these Gen Y are just now starting to have their own children. Gen X went up until people born ca. late 1970s. Gen Y became young adults around the turn of the millenium.

Gen X were introduced to personal computers, mobile devices, and then social networking, in their teen years and beyond, and have embraced these media fully. The millennials, Gen Y, even more so, to where they appear quite addicted.

My take is that the baby boomers, my generation, were quite skeptical of all the rules and traditions of the "hero generation" of WWII. In truth, we're not such a bad generation. When we finally got in a position of any authority, we threw out public smoking with a vengeance, for example, and wasn't that long overdue?

Boomers also introduced the concept of feminism, and in general questioning and being skeptical of all social norms. So, along with all the other things we questioned, we also changed the conventions for dress codes. At work, people don't wear ties anymore as a matter of course, the way it was when we entered the work force. We don't have the formal entertaining habits of our parents either. We questioned and rejected the previous social unacceptance of "alternative lifestyles," we rejected the seemingly automatic embracing of the formal religious affiliations of our parents, as historically people did, and on and on. We invented "rock and roll" music. The list is very long. And, let's not forget all the student protests of the late 1960s, as proof of how much our generation was rejection tradition. These protests died down the early 1970s, in large measure, I have to believe, because boomers were just then starting to enter the work force. (And in the West, also because the very unpopular Vietnam War, one great excuse for an infinite string of protests, ended.)

(Oh, and by the way, note that the boomer generation created the idea of "personal computing," and we also invented and rapidly propagated the Internet.)

Our biggest problem is that we accomplished the above social upheaval with a lot of self-righteousness. As a consequence, boomers also invented "political correctness." To me, that's a negative. Along with questioning and rejecting previous social norms, we went and invented our own norms. Oh well.

Gen X is a wonderful generation. They embraced the boomer generation's distaste for tradition-for-tradition's sake, including very much religions, but at the same time, without so much self righteousness. So Gen X can be quite disrespectful of some of our boomer nonsense, which is hilarious. I see a lot of really smart and talented people in Gen X, and very much independent thinking. Not sure exactly whether the boomers had any part to play in that. It does appear to be the natural progression of the previous boomer rebellion, though. Gen X is most certainly not regressing to the WWII generation social mores. And they introduced social networking sites.

Gen Y are living in a virtual world. The technology invented and embraced by the two previous generations became more totally immersive for Gen Y, it appears. This is not all good, but you know, maybe they'll grow up. Also, in part due to the economic malaise of the recent past, many of these Gen Y live at home, with their parents, a whole lot longer than previous generations did. The situation must be bad enough that it gets mentioned time and time again, and even becomes a bit of joke for TV commercials. Funny thing about Gen Y is that just maybe, they are starting to reject some of the social changes that the boomers initiated. Like, maybe the traditional family is making a comeback. It will be interesting to see how far back the pendulum will swing. But don't bet on it going back to the WWII generation!

Gen Z would be the children of the younger among Gen X, and the older among Gen Y. Too soon to tell. One thing one does notice, though, it that the children of today seem to embrace computing appliances with total ease. They use tablets with touch screens far, far sooner than they can even read and write. And isn't it interesting to see Gen X and Gen Y parents acting all like responsible parents should act?

I think we need to add, though, that all of the above, and most of the other comments, only apply in the context of Western culture, plus maybe countries like Japan. This does not apply across the board. So, with mass migrations, there is bound to be a culture clash. I think it is not reasonable to expect that Western culture would suddenly embrace a social regression, to norms of decades and centuries past. Tolerance, within limits as discussed in a separate thread, yes. But that's about it. So there will be tension there.

Just two points: the notion of a whole generation with shared values, traits and behavior is highly problematic. What we are talking here are mostly middle-class, white, males. If we as scholars and teachers are talking about generations we mostly talk about students. the highest educated "elite" of a society. 2. of course generations change and differ to those before them. Mostly because the world around them is changing and they have to adopt to it.

the table is ambivatent. On one side it summerises almost brilliant, on the other side dealing with humans statistics are missleading. Thinking in consumers statics works, acting with individuals not at all.

Please, have a look at the red list as well as the many troubles of industrial, agricultural, communal etc. pollution and all the side-effects destroying our environment. Certainly, this is not the sin of this generation but the consequence that the former (business, politician) generation holds firmly the power and were able to get loyal mercenaries from the younger generations or simply were able to reproduce their own ruler layer or caste.

Importante cuestión que nos hace reflexionar acerca de nuestra generación y las que nos antecedieron o son nuestra sucesoras.

Yo formo parte de la generación "Baby boomer"   (nací en 1950) de las personas que nacieron durante la explosión demográfica (gran nacimiento de niños y por tanto, aumento en las tasas de natalidad) la que se ubica después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, entre años 1946 y 1965. Lo siguiente es producto de mi experiencia y observaciones en colaboradores, compañeros de trabajo y alumnos:

• Mis colaboradores (personal a mi cargo) siendo yo coordinador y jefe de un equipo de trabajo en administración educativa, docencia e investigación (tenía entonces 32 años), fue la de trabajar con personas mayores a un servidor (que vivieron en la época de la primera y segunda guerra Mundial; "Generación Silenciosa"). Personas muy disciplinadas, trabajadoras y cumplidas, pero resistentes al cambio, como por ejemplo aceptar la autoridad y conocimientos de personas de menor edad aunque tuvieran mayor grado de estudios. Por lo mismo reacios a la capacitación y a la educación continua, con sus excepciones.
• Mis compañeros de trabajo en igualdad de circunstancias (también de la generación Baby boomer) como en el puesto, jefatura, coordinación y similar nivel de preparación y grados de estudio; fue de gran interacción y formación de equipos de proyectos para mejorar objetivos y metas tanto de la administración pública en el Sector Salud, como en la formación de personal de licenciatura (enfermeras, médicos, paramédicos), a nivel de postgrado (especializaciones en enfermería y medicina) y de grados académicos (maestrías y doctorados en ciencias médicas y biomédicas) tanto en UNAM como en IPN. Simultáneamente a nuestro trabajo como docente, desarrollábamos trabajos de investigación, creando nuevos conocimientos en la biomedicina, medicina clínica, sociomedicina, epidemiología e investigación educativa.  Teníamos gran consciencia social, luchábamos por conservar nuestros derechos laborales como profesionales y habitualmente éstos eran respetados en nuestras universidades e instituciones del sector salud donde laborábamos. También eramos conscientes de nuestros deberes y obligaciones. De mente muy abierta, susceptibles al cambio tecnológico (Telecomunicaciones e Internet) mismo que incorporamos en nuestro trabajo docente, administrativo y de investigación. Quien no tenía cierta competencia, la conseguía en cursos de actualización, diplomados, e incluso, cursando otras carreras paralelas a la medicina (Informática, Administración, Ingeniería, Fisicoquímica, etc).
• La mayoría de mis alumnos de aquella época eran de la Generación X (nacidos entre los años 1960 a 1980). Muchos de ellos compartían nuestras características personales, de familia y metas en la vida, como por ejemplo ser profesionales de la medicina, profesores de la misma e investigadores. Otros (los menos) con dificultades para ubicarse en su rol de alumno adulto (adulto joven) con derechos y responsabilidades, con frecuencia exigiendo más derechos (como alumnos) que responsabilidades (como profesionales adultos en formación). La gran ventaja de todos ellos es que ya se habían adentrado o estaban inmersos en el mundo de la tecnología de las telecomunicaciones y la informática (Internet)
• Otros de mis alumnos (porque seguía siendo profesor de licenciatura, especialidad, maestría y doctorado en Medicina Clínica y Ciencias Médicas, ya fueron de la siguiente generación, la Generación Y (nacidos después de 1980 al 2000). Todos inmersos en los cambios tecnológicos de las comunicaciones electrónicas e Internet. Internet ya formaba parte de sus instrumentos auxiliares en su formación y actualización profesional. Refractarios a la Cátedra. Nosotros los profesores también cambiamos a dichas circunstancias y en lugar de "Dar Clases o Cátedra en Aula", pasamos a ser "Promotores y Orientadores del Aprendizaje" de nuestros alumnos tanto en práctica análoga (simuladores en computadora o maniquíes; y en pacientes estandarizados) como en práctica equivalente (Real) en campo clínico en contacto con los pacientes (consulta externa en clínicas comunitarias y atención de pacientes en hospitales). Mis hijos son tanto de la Generación X como de la Generación Y.
• Desde el año 2000 a la fecha, muchos de mis colaboradores en la administración pública, docencia e investigación, fueron mis alumnos, por cierto muy competentes, abiertos al cambio y excelentes profesionales de la medicina. Algunos de ellos ya eran mis pares y uno que otro ya tenía un puesto superior, como Secretario de Salud de algún Estado de la República Mexicana (Morelos y Chiapas)
• También en dicho período tuve alumnos "Generación Z" (Generación del Milenio). Todos ellos ya inmersos en el mundo de la tecnología y muchos expertos tecnológicos (Telecomunicaciones, Mass-Media, Internet). Menos comprometidos con los logros sociales y laborales. Con mayor tendencia a buscar su propio beneficio y no tanto el de sus semejantes (a excepción de los miembros familiares). Sesgo hacia el ejercicio de la profesión por "Estatus" y no por "Misión o Vocación". Confianza casi ciega en la tecnología (check-up) y menos en la Medicina Clínica. Pocos orientados a la administración pública, docencia e investigación. De esta época son mis nietos.

Important question that makes us think about our generation and those that are before us or our successors.

I am part of the generation "Baby Boomers" (I was born in 1950) of people born during the population explosion (big birth of children and hence increase in birth rates) which is located after the Second World War between 1946 and 1965. The following is the result of my experience and observations collaborators, colleagues and students:

• My colleagues (my staff) being coordinator and head of a team working in educational administration, teaching and research (then was 32 years old), it was to work with older people to a server (who lived in the time of the first and second World war, "Silent Generation"). Very disciplined, hardworking and fulfilled, but resistant to change, such as accepting authority and knowledge of younger people even though they had higher degree of studies. Therefore reluctant to training and continuing education, with exceptions.
• My coworkers ceteris paribus (also of the Baby Boomer generation) and the position, leadership, coordination and similar level of preparation and study degrees; It was great interaction and team projects to improve goals and objectives of both the public administration in the health sector, and staff training degree (nurses, doctors, paramedics), postgraduate (specialization in nursing and medicine) and academic degrees (masters and doctorates in medical and biomedical sciences) both UNAM and IPN. Simultaneously with our work as teachers, we developed research, creating new knowledge in biomedicine, clinical medicine, sociomedicina, epidemiology and educational research. We had great social consciousness, we fought to preserve our rights as professionals and these were usually respected in our universities and health institutions where laborábamos. Also we were aware of our duties and obligations. Very open minded, susceptible to technological change (Telecommunications and Internet) same as we incorporate in our teaching, administrative and research work. Who did not have some competition, getting refresher courses, diploma, and even studying other parallel to medicine (IT, Administration, Engineering, Physical Chemistry, etc) careers.
• Most of my students at that time were of Generation X (born between 1960-1980). Many of them shared our personal characteristics, family and life goals, such as being medical professionals, teachers and researchers the same. Other (less) difficulties to settle in their role as adult student (young adult) with rights and responsibilities, often demanding more rights (such as students) that responsibilities (as adult professionals in training). The big advantage of these is that they had already penetrated or were immersed in the world of telecommunications technology and computer (Internet)
• Another of my students (because it was still a teacher's degree, specialty, masters and doctorate in Clinical Medicine and Medical Sciences, as were the next generation, Generation Y (born after 1980 to 2000). All immersed in technological changes electronic communications and the Internet. Internet as part of its auxiliary instruments in their training and professional development. Resisters Chair. We teachers also switched to these circumstances and instead of "Teaching or Chair Classroom," we become "Promoters and Guiding Learning" of our students both in similar practice (simulators computer or dummies, and standardized patients) as equivalent practice (Real) in clinical field in contact with patients (outpatients in community clinics and care patients in hospitals). My children are both Generation X and Generation Y.
• Since 2000 to date, many of my colleagues in public administration, teaching and research, my students were certainly very competent, open to change and excellent medical professionals. Some of them were already my peers and one or two already had a senior position, as Secretary of Health of any State of Mexico (Morelos and Chiapas)
• Also in that period I had students "Generation Z" (Millennial Generation). They already immersed in the world of technology and many technology experts (Telecommunications, Mass-Media, Internet). Less committed to social and labor achievements. With greater tendency to seek their own benefit and not so much their peers (except for family members). Bias towards the exercise of the profession "Status" and not "Mission or Vocation". almost blind trust in technology (check-up) and less in clinical medicine. Few oriented public administration, teaching and research. Of this time are my grandchildren.

It is right that generation X (the youngest) is most hi-tech to cyber technologies and social media and older generations are somewhat less. But people in organizations and working places search methods to understand each other. I think these differences are not up to creating clusters within the community at a working place.

I have not much studied about generations but I am fortunate enough to work with different people of different generations. Probably generation could be viewed as a perspective to understand how to deal with that group of people but exceptions are always there in it. So scientifically as well as psychologically it is fine if the generations are divided into a group.

One can talk to the generation Z children as they talk to other elders, be friendly with generation Y and consider the new opinions of generation X as they may have some new angle to view and think differently. This is my opinion and based on my experience I write answers on RG. 

I have no idea why people on RG do not answer the questions. I read certain questions but when I see that someone as already answered what I was thinking then I leave that question without answering and I do upvote the answer that is similar to my answer.

I never divided People into Clusters of Generations. I even did not know These ABC...XYXZ systematic. Last sunday bying roles for breakfast I listened to a Radio Report about Generation Y. I learnt a lot and I asked RG members if this Separation  into Clusters is scientifically useful.
