I think the first and most important thing is that we should not support our leader in invading other countries. If we do, this will happen what is happening in Syria. War is never a solution. 

We should help the refugees with whatever we can. It depends where about you live in the world but if you live somewhere where you meet these refugees treat them like a human, and dont labelled them.

If you have nothing (like a house, food, clothes, money etc) to share with them, just share a good smile and loving words with them. 

Vote for those politicians who support these refugees. 

As a scientist we should study those factors which give rise to such disasters and give recommendation for avoiding them in the future.

I think you ask too much and overestimate the opportunities of a single man in such a complicated and mass phenomenon. This is a worldwide political and economic question which cannot be solved by particular humanitarian actions of a single man. One can mainly help to start the process of democratisation as well as to distribute correctly the Earth’s richness.

The integration would be another possibility but you have much more experience with the troubles of this option in Germany. I am sorry, I was not able to suggest a better proposition but I do not have the necessary information and tools.

I think  every one has  to  study  in his own  land whatever the circumstances

I agree with you, good point. But as a scientist I can only give recommendation. This is the job of politicians to implement it. Probably the people who have the power, they know the solution but are they really keen to address the issue, probably not.

Hi! Good question! First it seems hopeless, but at least in the long run there are things we can do. Be global and borderless in our minds and discriminate noboby concerning networking, research cooperation etc. Act against all kinds of excluding mechanisms built on place, borders, local conceptions of having "world excellence", etc. And as for Sweden who has received many refugees, make it easier to get into academic education and careers for academically educated refugees. But our rules are many and our systems slow, so many educated people end up in jobs they are over-qualified for, if they get a job at all. I have worked with one small mechanism using learning centers in sparsely populated areas ( where many asylum-seekers are placed first) for the study of MOOCs in study circle form. I agree with you that a single person can physically do only very little. But, many single persons together can move the world! Look atv1989 in Germany f.e.

Or look to August to December 2015 at all the refugees coming to Germany.

If you allow I will tell you what my friends and I do. Just to give a proof that single persons can do something. And if RG members will follow we would be hundreds of persons a.s.o.

Beginning in Jan 2016 we invited about 10 young unaccompanied refugees to join us in our youth tool shop we run each saturday. After 9 month we see tremendous progress in development of these persons. 2 of them are on the way to study and will probabely work as scientists at the beginning. Their Integration into our little group of teachers and normal citizens is encouraging.

Perhaps you can follow now what I want to stimulate?

In my humble opinion these two situations are without any intimate relationship... The war and the refugees are a problem issues of serious but which also covers many and complex events: on the one hand, the humanitarian issue for which there are already several State responses adapted but incomplete, on the other side the problem of radical Islam that uses this situation to flood up the old world of terrorists who have already shown their offensive capability.

The question is therefore not - in my opinion - what to do as a scientist (except physicians), but what to do as a human being concerned by this situation as we should all be. Moving these populations and drowning them into new complex cultural problems is probably an inadequate solution and a transient one. Fighting against those who are responsible for the war (with political and military issues) and limiting its effects on the spot is probably the only real solution on which we should now all working.

I agree. But RG is a platform for scientists and therefore I asked scientists what they/we do in the upper situation. I did not think that scientists should solve the problem alone. I think  scientists can  help  them  indirectly through  research  

For RG scientists's actions (Not political actions) I can suggest two things:

1) A question line trying to understand what mess is going on which has lead to the mass production of refugees over the last decades. Also we have to know the key factors which led to failure of UN and the huge armies of politicians. Hoping the coming opinions would give any lights to stop it.

2) A second question line trying to understand the current aids offered to refugees and their policies of accommodations in different countries.

thanks for inviting me to contribute inputs. As individual RG members, depending on our professional fields of specialisation and also as kind hearted human, we may provide following kinds of help/assistance to the refugees:

(1) education and trauma counselling for children, (2) sponsoring a family and providing emergency shelter assistance, food and living supplies, (3) providing health care, vocational training and finding some emergency means of livelihood, (4) providing information, translation and legal services, and (5) making a donation and fund raising effortAlthough as individual, our contribution may be little, but in terms of quality, our support may go long way to reduce misery & suffering of the refugees. During the 1971 war of independence, lakhs of Bengali families took refuge in India for one year. Then I saw many individual Indians extending similar help and assistance to the refugees to reduce their suffering.

When the body is mutilated there is no respite for the soul and in a place like Syria, the body has no value and the soul awaits its liberation. What  I do !!!  i do contribute my time and energy in a shelter home who accommodate refugees (woman and kids)  since long ...

Things such as : Food /Clothing and shelter , they seem to be the need of the hour.

Once they have basics , I taught kids from Haiti (in 2010 ) and even now (in Toronto)

In totally many things can be done , meeting the basics is the starting point and all that is needed in man-power to just contribute in any form .

No not money but energy and time ...

One thing I have noticed is kids (a bit older) are affected psychologically that needs to be addressed as Helena mentioned music is one such therapy .

Refugees basically require a place to stay safe and live. This requirement can be provided by the state or private parties which are financially sound. Our entry as research scientist or educators come next, to identify, customize, synergize teams, skills enhancement, livelihood opportunities and migratory skills identification comes later. 

I am willing to support on evolution, implementation, monitor and evaluate such process. This intervention requires people like-minded and can be pooled from RG, however this requires adequate funding, which is for evolving global citizens, by converting the crises into opportunity. The expense would be on No-profit-no-loss basis, overseen by UN / World Bank / any such status which is pan global for human kind.

What we can do is do not vote to the doubious politicians who can create or mantain the wars. In such a way wars and refugees would not have. But in reality as they exist, one should treate them, the refugees, as your own neighbours, with charity. Have you heard the gospel of today about the final judge? The eternal salvation depends of our charity with our neighbours today.

It is really a very nice question. We should help them by mentally, physically, monetary, socially, etc..

Expose the magor reasons beyond unjustice in the world by statistical way may be reduce the number of refugees and help the others.

Surely the question is provocative and should involve motivations that are not at all known. My suggestion is that, at first, a worldwide chain help to refugees, then through a mediator, seeking the end of the conflict!

Individuals can definitely make great difference! Scientists and other citizens can help the people migrating to their land by treating them with dignity. Rest of the things will fall in place automatically.

Dear Peter, we must respect and support unconditionally the refugees, given that they are victims of circumstances that they did not control, and remember always that could be us. Without real Education there will be always greed, uncontrolled ambition, weapons, wars, and refugees.

 For tomorrow I've put a meeting room of Afkikker at the disposal of a Macedonian professor to organize a Balkan evening with lecture and music. She may serve Macedonian wine to the students and invite other people of her country to socialize with the Belgian students. Although the Balkan in not in war anymore, they were a few years ago, and Belgium accepted a lot. Now we will enjoy the peace.

As scientists we can propose some solution to the process which leads people to abandon their homeland to find peace and raise their families.

It is basically outside interference -strong governments meddling in other peoples' affairs for economic benefits. We, as taxpayers - are supporting these interferences that lead to the creation of refugees. So, we have to criticize our politicians. 

Groups of people through church or aid societies can sponsor individual refugees to come to our country, if the government lets them in. If you know which towns or villages in Greece are helping refugees, we can send them aid in the form of money, clothing, books, etc. For this last task, governments help out by sending the materials collected themselves. If I am going to send them myself, it may go astray and never reach its destination.

A campaign showing how much some of us are spending on cats and dogs can help to change our attitudes towards refugees. Who should have the priority? !!

A solution to those inhuman decisions is needed. What the huge armies of politicians are doing. Refugees production has become an endless process.

Given the physical needs of food, cleanliness and safety, I have contributed money or in kind (food, water, items for personal hygiene) to mitigate the needs of immigrant refugees in my country (Mexico).

In a discussion network I contributed participating and providing opinions, comments and views on the human rights of people in distress and suffering because their dignity and their human rights are not respected.

A member of RG researcher Pakistan, which by their beliefs and publications considered in their country unethical and mystic of Islam, and who had to migrate to Malaysia, leaving family and work; I have been in personal communication, encouraging and guiding them to keep up their courage and continue to contribute in their scientific disciplines with creativity and new knowledge (Veterinary Medicine, Food Industry of meat).

Perhaps the easiest way is asking them: 'How can I be of help to you?', or giving them money in a regular basis, but taking into account the situation of employment and other issues in Western Europe, I'd negotiate with places plenty of room to admit those people in despair, and pay the receiving country a monthly fee for them, for sure, living in Ukraine, Romania, or Russian republics is cheaper than in Luxembourg., Thanks, regards, + Salut

I just would like to give a little Information about the work with refugees last year in our youth tool shop: we accompanied 26 young refugees over the year on Saturdays. 8 of them became members in our organisation. 3 of them we integrated as "teachers" to help the other refugees to integrate. But what I like most is that 2 neighbours which were very critical against our acting with refugiees are now normal or even friendly. Little steps are possible!!!
