brightly I think the modern control fields enter in Engineering and the others must be eliminated such as adaptive or optimum control and so on. The Fuzzy logic entered in any engineering field and in the future we can see another aspect of the science by AI.
Fuzzy logic as a theory is within the scope of AI. The applications of both fuzzy logic type 1 and type 2 have been developed and increased in control systems or in other fields. However, difficult, complex and huge-data tasks can be solved better using other modern AI techniques like machine learning and deep learning than fuzzy logic due to the restrictions of fuzzy logic capability.
As long as we want to model all relative concepts (Velocity, heat, age, evaluation, small, high, success, light, clean etc ..) mathematically and according to expert opinion, and Fuzzy will remain popular. In a world where control of a system (Air conditioning, temperature, velocity, intersection etc ..) is not required, there will be no Fuzzy. So fuzzy will always be. I have at least 10 articles from different areas where I use Fuzzy logic.
I can tell you what we do research here at Taubaté University (Brazil-SP) in master's degrees.
I currently have two students one researching a way to apply fuzzy logic in control of machine and environmental parameters for production of rubber items via extruders ( Wagner Comenale ).
Another research relates RF signal strength to distance via fuzzy logic to create a locating beacon system. This for application in locating people in door and out door ( William Albertassi ).
I see many current and future applications for fuzzy logic, mainly with fusion of other AI techniques.
I can tell you that in the area of management and economics the use of fuzzy logic is growing. Both in my masters thesis and my doctoral thesis I used fuzzy to create indexes for measuring poverty (this something well consolidated) and performance of firms in value chains (this quite innovative), respectively.

I see especially in the management & business area that there is a growing discovery and interest in fuzzy as a support for decision making and risk management. Particularly in the management of supply chains there is a lot of research with fuzzy logic.
One of the major applications of fuzzy logic is the Fuzzy Inference Systems (FIS). In many of the application areas now a days FIS is used. There are two approaches to FISs. One is due to Mamdani and the other one is due to Sugeno. Both are similar. But the Mamdani model is more popular.
FIS has been extended to IFIS (Intuitionistic Fuzzy Inference Systems). Many of the meta heuristic algorithms and optimization algorithms are providing better results by using FIS or IFIS.
