Hello everybody,

The R&D department of my employer is interested in writing patents.

I have an academic background, which means I know to make a new papers. I am referring of the whole process of creating innovative results (identifying unsolved problems in the existing literature, getting the idea for an innovative solution, implementing it and compare it with existing results, wrapping up everything in a nice journal paper, responding to the comments of the reviewers, and finally seeing my work published).

How about patents?

What are the main differences between producing a good publishable result and producing a good patentable result? What additional skills are needed? What are the first steps to take to grow such skills?

I thank you all for your precious answers.
