I routinely see requests under the questions category for particular PDF patterns. What is behind that? Do these researchers not have access to the database for themselves?
Many if not most compounds have more than one card for them. Different sources, different preparations lead to slightly different patterns. Maybe it is in the peak positions or relative intensities. Some samples may have included a second phase. Some records have more information than others.
Therefore, it seems that they should be matching your sample to the available patterns and citing the one that best fits. I don't think they should be citing a particular card just because that it what someone else referenced in their paper. They may not have it right. (I have seen that error before.)
Dear Warren Straszheim Many researchers may not have a direct subscription or access to the XRD PDF database, so requesting a specific PDF record from you can get the information you need more quickly.
Even with database access, finding a specific compound pattern can take a lot of time and effort, but requesting it from you can get the information you need quickly.
I understand that, but what if a different record would yield a better fit? Maybe your sample does not best fit that particular record. Perhaps it is enough to say that it is fairly consistent with that record.
FWIW, I just had to correct a researcher who cited the wrong PDF number in their published paper. (They have had many problems with their details.) If you had asked for that PDF record based on their say-so, you would have gotten a record that was of no use to you. It is better to be able to search for yourself.
