I am working with lipids and wanted to know whether there is a fatty acid quantification kit that can measure the concentration of free fatty acid in solution?
I have come across one from Abnova, which uses palmitic acid as a standard. Just wondering whether anyone has used anything similar or can suggest another kit or assay to quantify free fatty acids?
Kit will no be available to measure the quantity of free fatty acid. And moreover, determination of free fatty acid is simple. By using titration method you can analyse the free fatty acid content.
Briefly, take a known quantity of oil in a 500 ml conical flask and add 25 ml of Diethyl ether and 25 ml of Ethanol. Dissolve oil content completely by hand mix and add 10 drops of Phenolphthalein indicator. Titrate the solution against 0.1 N potassium hydroxide till obtaining pale pink colour as an end point. Use the respective factor to calculate the free fatty acid content. If your sample is solid in nature, extract the lipid using a combination of organic solvents like chloroform and methanol and use this lipid extract as in the place of oil to determine the free fatty acid which will give a better result rather taking solid samples directly for the analysis.
I don't think that there is a kit that can asses Free fatty acids amounts. GC/MS can do that with an appropriate protocol.

I am also not informed about the kits available for free fatty acid value (FFA value) measurement. I work with fish oil and measure FFA value using AOCS Official Method Ca 5a-40.
