I am working on my master thesis in psychology and I would greatly appreciate your feedback regarding the interview questions. Are they clear? Should any of the questions be written in simpler language? Should I delete any of the questions? Add a question?
The study aims to investigate maternal perceptions about cartoon viewing in a sample of mothers of preschoolers.
The main objective is t to have an in depth understanding of the precursors of parental involvement and the value systems that determine their mediation strategies
Research Question
1. How do mothers perceive the influence of cartoon viewing on their preschoolers?
Interview questions
- What concerns do you have, if any?
7. How do cartoons affect or not affect your child? Behavior, attitude?
8. How do you interact with your child’s media use?
- What limitation rules do you have when it comes to media exposure in general?
- What limitation rules do you have when it comes to cartoon viewing in particular?
Or
- What programs are allowed or not allowed? Why?
9.If you were to produce a cartoon movie what elements would you make sure it includes?
Regarding the question 7, the mothers do not know the effects of carton viewing on child, give the details about the effects you look for, such as:
What's the impact of carton viewing on the behavioral style of your child
What's the impact of carton viewing on the dietary style of your child
What's the impact of carton viewing on the eye health of your child
................................ etc
Your questions are very good for the study aim of investigating maternal perceptions about cartoon viewing.
However, you say your main objective is to understand the precursors of parental involvement. You don't have questions that directly address this objective. You could ask if anything happened that caused them to be more attentive to what their child watches.
Similarly, you say you want to understand their value system. You should ask probing questions about their values.
Generally for such studies like yours, consider applying questions that have been tried and tested, that is, employed in previous studies. If you are using questions that you designed yourself, which I assume you did, I recommend testing them on a pilot study involving a small group of participants FIRST (e.g., n = 10) before going forward with the formal interviews/assessment. In that case, you would know which questions work best.
