In Norway it is a policy to facilitate refugees through career guidance. The aim is to get people in to work as soon as possible. The idea is that this will benefit the refugees and help with faster integration. There are of course many challenges. For you, what are, or would be, key factors in career guidance of refugees newly arrived to your country?
This question has many answers in my opinion. Assuming the refugees have some sort of permission to stay in the country for a longer time and/or are in an institutional process which may give them the possibility to gain access to technical and institutional facilities, here are some suggestions:
- training and upgrading through online courses. Very often refugees who are still in asylum recognition processes are mostly waiting for institutuonal answers, and in that waiting time they do not get access to formal educational institutions or cannot register as a student. What they can get access to however is to online or distance education which also leads to some sort of formal accreditaiton or recognition. One organisation that specialises in this features is Kiron - https://kiron.ngo/ - for example. There are however other ones. The key point is that while waiting it is possible to learn new things which may be helpful in setting up a new (working) life.
- access to sport and music facilities. Inclusion in sport and music facilities help to connect to people and gain access to social fabrics. Although this may not directly support getting a job, it may help to get connected to people who either know of jobs - paid or voluntary -.
- get access to internships. Most educational institutions require students to seek short or longer interships. As a resulot, many companies are increaisngly getting used to having interns for shorter or longer periods of time. this new realities may also be useful for refugees seeking a new life.
These are just some first ideas. There are however many other possibilities.
