Several studies on estimation of ingestion dose from radionuclides take into account fresh samples. Is this the correct procedure. I believe it should be determined in cooked food.
Yes several studies estimation of ingestion dose from radionuclideds takes first or mostly into accounts the fresh samples because the estimation in the cooked food must be justifiable. The cooking process reduces the level of radioactivity contamination in the food. Therefore it is appropriate to conduct preliminary studies with the fresh sample to ascertain where the dose limits of ingestion are not exceeded. If the dose limit of ingestion is not exceeded then there is no need to estimate the ingestion dose in the cooked food because the cooking process will further reduce the radioactivity levels. If however, the dose limits are exceed then it is justifiable to estimate the ingestion dose from the cooked food.
agree with you Lordford but when people do dose assessment and give ingestion dose in humans I dont think raw food estimation is correct way to do it. Yes you are right it should be used for screening purposed but specifically for ingestion dose assessment cooked food be used, that is what I think but I will like to have opinion of other experts.
In dose assessments, for example after major releases of radioactivity, or for testing compliance of chronic releases with limits one starts with a worst-case, conservative scenario. This incliudes that the members of the public in the vicinity of the plant / the source of the accident eat all own produce, drink water from local sources and so on. If under these circumstances their projected dose is lower than limits or guidelines, then the situation is safe. If not, more detailled assessments may be necessary, but they would likely be based on measurements (whole-body count or excretion analysis), not on more complicated models.
THomas thanks for your input. Yes I am in agreement with your suggestion to the extent that is it good while a screening is done. But in order to do a dose estimation due to ingestion cooked food should be used for dietary uptake.
