I am trying to determine allele frequency of a hla allele. Preliminary analysis shows the prevalence of the allele (homo or heterozygous both) is 3%. The allele is related to a disease (After exposure to risk factor). Taking samples from college or university can help reduce time and money. Taking samples from hospital may take time. Though both ways may have ethnic diversity, college students are of a given generation only. What to do. Please suggest with references to read.
Most genetic epidemiological studies are hospital based. Regarding college students, the only inconvenience that I see is that the age range would be pretty narrow. However, the latter would become a strength if the patient and control groups age range is paired. I can imagine something like "association of XX gene YY polymorphism with ZZ disease in college students".
Thanks very much. The college students will not be case-control separated as this will be more like seeing what is the prevalence of the allele in Nepalese population. The cases however are of all age group.
Will taking narrow age group affect calculations of hardy weinberg equilibrium?
The gene is autosomal.

Even though a narrow age range could be perceived as bias, I doubt it would have a considerable (if any) effect on Hardy Weinberg calculation. As long as you exclude consanguineous donors (brothers, cousins, etc, of an already taken donor) HWE would be fine. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any reference about it, so I am giving you the advice taking in account my own experience.
