Dear all,
I am preprocessing fMRI images with SPM 12. In realign & unwrap: "Phase map (vdm* file)
Select pre-calculated phase map, or leave empty for no phase correction". I understand that applying the VDM will help correcting the eventual image distortions but what happen if I don't have a VDM file and leave it empty? Is it the same as just realigning the images without unwrapping?

I am not sure you really want to perform realign and unwarp without voxel displacement map, because this input is crucial. Whatever the output will be - assuming SPM will not throw any error -, I would consider realign without unwarp (and be careful with results in susceptible areas) or use a different approach for EPI distortion correction.
