Hi, I want to know how to estimate potential flood losses and damages from remote sensing and GIS under a climatic change scenarios (say; 10, 15 and 50 return period of extreme event).
you need to compare two image dates; one before flood and the other after the flood. classify the two images, then overlay the two images in GIS and subtract to find out change in land cover. further analysis is then needed.
Use of Hec GeoRAS can provide you details of losses using Digital Elevation Model. You just need a high resolution DEM for this. If you are interested only in identifying the losses of past flood, then simply do the comparison of the pre flood and post flood images.
Thanks for your responses. I'm interested in both past flood and future flood losses. The question is how to estimate expected damages/losses for a return extreme flood events.
