I have prepared mortar samples (cement (OPC type I), sand and water) with C:S = 1:2.45 and W/C= 0.48 and calculated flexural strength after 24 hours.

I have tested my samples (20 X 20 X 100 mm) according to ASTM D790-03 (Strain rate 0.10 mm/min).

I have tested 5 samples but every sample is showing different flexure load and different flexure extension.

What could be the reason for this behavior?

The additional information is here:

  • flexural strength (Mpa)
  • Sample 1: 1.7705

    Sample 2: 3.2932

    Sample 3: 0.8826

    Sample 4: 3.8768

    Sample 5: 3.5646

    2. Mortar mixer is used for mixing the raw materials having low speed (140 rpm) and high speed (285 rpm) through following steps.

    • Pour measured water in the mixer.
    • Add cement and start mixer at low speed for 30 seconds.
    • Sand was added in the mixer steadily from 30 s to 60 s.
    • Mixer was switched to higher speed and mixing continues for another 30 s.
    • After 1 min 30 sec, mixer was off for 15 seconds and mortar adhering to the wall and bottom part was scrape off.
    • Mixing was continued at high speed for 60 seconds.
    • After mixing, the samples were molded and vibrate for 2 minutes (same vibration frequency every time).
    • And then samples were stored in a covered plastic box for 24 hours.
    • The steps of mixing is same every time.

    3. Curing:

    • Temperature (10 ° C),
    • Closed plastic container,
    • humidity-15 to 20%.
