I am conducting experiments using a 1-g shake table and have collected data from both accelerometers and strain gauges. However. I am uncertain about the appropriate filtering method for the data. Should I apply a low-pass filter or a band-pass filter for optimal results? The shake table has a maximum frequency of 50 Hz, while the excitation frequency is 2 Hz.
The quality of your data depends largely on your shake table, sensors, and lab environment. However, since your excitation frequency is 2 Hz, it is expected that most of your significant responses will occur below 15 or 20 Hz. If there is nothing unusual happening with your data collection at the lower end (below 2 Hz), I would suggest that a low-pass filter could be a good choice, with a cutoff frequency 5 to 10 Hz higher than your target frequency (for example, if you want to capture responses up to 10 Hz, set the cutoff frequency to 15 or 20 Hz). If you end up needing to use a band-pass filter due to any unexpected shifts, consider a range between 0.5 Hz (or any number lower than 2 Hz) and 15 Hz (or your target frequency) to cover all significant signals.
