Grass (or any other feed) produces more methane if it rots on the ground than if it goes through an animal. An animal also uses it to produce meat, and energy. Grass eventually produces exactly the same amount of CO2 as it consumed while growing.

In India cows are reared by farmers in a herd of 8 to 10 animals moreover some farmers use cow dung to produce methane gas and use it as fuel but those are on a small scale.

The developed countries have focused on decreasing the methane emissions of dairy cattle by genetic selection, without negatively affecting important economic traits; or by imposing carbon tax on livestock farming.
