Three thoughts on fathering.

1. (Depending upon sample size) A residential-and-biological father can be diagnostically distinct from other men: stepfathers/adjunct boy friends. It is often useful to bifurcate these statuses

2. Siblings can be important. When there is a new birth, fathers tend to bias toward the toddler. Mothers tend to bias toward the infant. 3. There is (arguably) an independent father-child bond which is separate from the man-woman bond as well as from the mother-child bond. Framed differently, the nuclear family -- Mom & Dad & child(ren) -- is a universal. Accordingly, fathers have a very old evolutionary history. Some primordial men had no children -- hence no grandchilden, hence no lineage. Some men did have children whom he chose to nurture with time and treasure. Over long stretches of time, successful lineages had men selected-in who had a psycho-emotional template which -- in turn -- gave them satisfaction/gratification. That is, fathers were postively reinforced as they nurtured their (own) children: the father-child bond. I hope the above is useful/interesting.

Unfortunately, I do not personally know of any research pertaining to this, but I do think that it is an interesting topic. I think it would be interesting to take a look deeper into the cultural differences between how fathers bond with their children.
