Unfortunately, I have not found anything on the cerebral organization of languages acquired implicitly vs. languages learned explicitly and what role cognitive controls plays in each type of language learning. Moreover, regarding the formal/informal distinction, you might be interested in the attached paper by Johnson et al. - not very recent and focusing on cognitive style, but cognitive style is probably related, in turn, to executive control.
