Dear Colleagues,
Do you know of any applications that help adjust references in a manuscript to a journal's stylesheet? I am familiar with Mendeley but I was wondering whether there is program that does not require prior uploading cited papers (just as Mendeley does).

I recommend EndNote, and I am sure a large number of people are using it. You may be able get the application from your Uni library for free. You can initially gather your references from various sources (e.g., PubMed), and then you can set the sytle of the Journal you choose. There is a long list of journals already available there, if not, you can download them on line.

Hi, Monika.
I am using Zotero (https://www.zotero.org/) to organize my references. If you install a Word plug-in for Zotero, you should be able to easily change the citation style to conform the requirements of any given journal. Even if you don't find a style because for example it is very rare and so far no one has created it, you can define it for yourself. Zotero integrates with the browser and lets you add any article - all its metadata necessary for citation and optionally the PDF of the article itself with the click of a button.

I've been using Zotero a lot (it saved me many times!) and probably this is the best "open-source" option out there. Also, I have been very happy with Papers but - just like EndNote - it comes with a license.

You may not know that the majority of journals offer special templates with their styles for most popular reference manages, as e.g. EndNote, which I am also using and recommend. And it is very easy to edit any style if you do not have this template.
All the recommended reference management tools look great. Thanks so much for your suggesions.
