Can anyone offer practical tips on designing a simple einzel lens system for focusing an electron beam e.g. from a hair-pin tungsten filament.
I have played with a simple extractor and lens system in SIMION (ion optics simulation) but I am unable to get the "circle of least confusion" of the focused beam much smaller than the original source / cross-over size. eg. with a source of +/- 50um @ 0.5eV initial energy, accelerated through 1-5KeV, the best focus is about +/- 15um.
Any tips on good Einzel lens geometry - lens thickness vs diameter, separation, rounded, square, sharp edge etc.?
(I have done lots of background reading on the subject, but have not found any real practical tips on good design!)
