For a local council, I am compiling a literature review on effects of festivals and other large events (people, music, food, cars, fireworks in different combinations and numbers) on nature (mainly birds, bats and mammals on/in the ground). These festivals are often organized in or near areas with natural values (city parks, nature or green areas close to cities). Regular papers can of course be found, but I hope there is ‘grey literature’ on this in different countries: case studies where not only assessments from literature have been made but where effects have been assessed and measured in the field. Suggestions, references, pdf’s are welcome!
@Napoleon Ono Imaah In urban areas in our densely populated country, outside the most heavily populated and used areas, there often are natural values worthwhile to be protected, and with a legal obligation to do so. And that is where this local council aims at. I understand your position, but it does not hold for our situation.

There have been some highly publicised cases here in Scotland which might be quite relevant to your situation. In both cases the species are rare and protected here but are much more common elsewhere in northern Europe. I have attached a link to the Environmental Statement for one event which was prepared for the organisers: this event was given permission to go ahead. There is a second example from a newspaper article on an event from earlier this year. There are more media articles on both events, some balanced and some less so, but I hope you will find something useful.

Hi.
I know cases of negative effects in some raptors, e.g. Barbary Falcon (Falco peregrinus pelegrinoides) in the Canary Islands, when some music festivals have been celebrated close to the breeding terrritories of this species. In any case, there is very few field information on such subjetc here.

I think there is some information about the subject in "grey literature" (some non-published reports on raptors and ther conservation), but at this moment I don't have any pdf file on it. I forgot an important fact: the problems caused to a local subspecies of Barn Owl (Tyto alba gracilirostris), endemic from the islands of Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and nearby islets (Canaries), by people climbing in some cliffs, entrance of caves and ravines where this bird is living. In some cases there are also fires, music and other activities in such places, so the degree of disturbance to Barn Owls, Common Kestrels and other rupicolous birds may be high.

I am conducting a study of the effects of a music festival on the foraging behavior and reproduction of the Yellow-billed Magpie, one of two species that are fully endemic to California. I am interested in any updates regarding literature published on the effects of concerts on birds.

I live at Chapada dos Veadeiros, Brazil, and we're having that kind of party in the middle of nature right now. I'm a biologist and also into politics at the moment. I am readying my study for submission on effects of a 2-day concert on the California endemic and colonial-nesting Yellow-billed Magpie. Briefly, we did not find detrimental effects. Magpies likeley were excluded from active concert areas (we could not measure abundance due to the presence of 20,000 concert-goers. Magpies appeared to be attracted to the concert site the morning after the first concert day, likely to feed on anthropogenic food waste. Reproductive success was identical to that at nearby parks that did not have concerts. Our results likely reflect specific conditions, so it is hard to generalize. In particular, the concerts occurred during the incubation period, so food demand was likely lower than in the egg-laying or nestling stages. Yellow-billed Magpies are also intelligent and this population was somewhat pre-adapted to tolerate human presence.
