Yes, I have experience in reviewing for scientific journals. For me, reviewing is a way to stay updated with the latest research in my field while also contributing to the scientific community. I usually combine it with my main academic activity by setting aside specific time for peer review, treating it as part of my professional development.
To improve editorial and reviewing skills, I follow a few strategies:
Reading the COPE guidelines and the editorial policies of journals.
Learning from feedback on my own submitted papers.
Participating in reviewer trainings and webinars offered by publishers (e.g., Elsevier, Springer).
Discussing difficult cases with more experienced colleagues.
Overall, editorial and reviewing work requires balance, but it enhances critical thinking, writing quality, and understanding of publication ethics
Peer reviewing is considered the standard for the evaluation of journal submissions. However, the differences in levels of expertise, approach depth of evaluation, and voluntary vs. paid commitment affect the results. I usually conduct thorough reviews; however, not all referees do the same kind of job. As an editor, who publishes a diamond open access journal, I often struggle to get good reviews. I always say that my evaluations of manuscripts are the best and most important because the range peer review is very wide. Therefore, I have developed a skill that only comes with experience: assessing content, methodology, rigor, applicability, value, etc. of different types of studies in the field of the journal I publish (dentistry). On the other side, peer reviewing for conferences is basically the same but, in my experience, evaluation forms and requirements are not as rigorous as journal reviews.
Hi, Stanislav. I have experience in reviewing for scientific journals. Many times is a very interesting task. Other, when the manuscript is poor written or with serious flaws, is really a hard work. Workk at two sides of the table, as reviewer and as author, give me a broader perspective.
I also have experience as Editor or member of Editorial Board. Next October I will gave a course for Editors, at Asunción, Paraguay, at the National University of Asunción, an event organized by the goverment.
