Hello everyone,
We are running some experiments where we have some "normal" or control wood and some treated wood. We would like to compare after some time, how much did the wood decay, and for this we just plan to compare the dry mass before and after the decay. Does any of you know any other way which is also interesting to check how much the wood decayed? Some easy methods would be welcome, but some more complex ones can also be of interest.

Hello! You can control change of the volume of the sample, if such changes are in your case. You can monitor changes in hardness. You can monitor changes in the acidity of using indicator. You can use the method of acoustic emission.

Depending on the samples size, you may also condiser techniques based on the MOE measurement such as vibrational analysis or 3 or 4 points bending tests. Mechanical properties are actually acurate indicators of the level of decay, especially for the early stage.

Hello Mr. Barbero-López. In my PhD Thesis I did some statistical models to predict the behavior of 3 Amazonian hardwoods in field, such as marupá, tauari and cumaru (low, medium and high specific gravity). I employed 2 nondestructive techniques, such as stress wave and ultrasonics to generate the input data on the models, just travel time of the sinal on the longitudinal and transversal sides of the specimen. The results indicated that ultrasonics models were the ones who best fitted to predict the life in service. Unfortunately, my thesis is in portuguese and we are publishing some papers about this subject right now. If you want to download it, you can do it on the link below.
