I have used DSSAT-CERES-Maize model and APSIM. DSSAT is easy to use and calibrate. It comes bundled with GENCALC and GLUE for calibrating new crop cultivars. It also come with adequate documentation on how to create Soil file, Climate File, Experimental files, Time series files etc.

APSIM is also easy to use. However, it does not have a module for automated calibration of new cultivars. The new APSIMX comes with adequate documentation.

an important question, waiting for answers

Dear Rasanja Ranasinghe, greetings!!!

As an agriculturalist, I have known something similar b/n Sri Lanka and my country. We have so many beautiful models and so many heartbreaking and bad facts on the ground. My wonder is that "What are these fancy models good for the poor farmers? Where are we wrong (professionals of agriculture in these poor countries). I don't think models are wrong; rather we are using them wrongly.

While we are studying and not yet finishing one model; the scientists are making more than 100 models.
