it will for sure be part of the problem, but 23-25 wk related BPD is very likely to a certain extent a developmental 'arrest' or 'dysplasia', and not just only pressure, volume or oxygen. cfr the recent IGF-1 related observations

New BPD is a multifactorial disease of the more premature infants.  Avoid  hyperoxia/ oxygen toxicity, barotrauma, volutrauma at the early initial resuscitation and avoid mechanical ventilation is beneficial, but it helps only a part of the problem, which includes prematurity, genetic predisposition, infection/inflammation, nutrition, and more...

I'm agree with Dr Allegaert, there are two factors than are difficult to modify than are the extreme prematurely and the inflammatory response onset in the fetal life. But minimise the damage is a good option.
