There are many academic conferences offered and more seem to be offered every year. Many conferences are focused on a specific academic major but others are general in nature. Does your college or university encourage (or discourage) you to attend conferences on an annual basis? Why or why not?
Yes, my college encourage the lecturers by setting it as one of the key performance indicator (KPI) for the lecturers.
One of the reasons is to expose the lecturers to recent development in their fields and to to train them to promote their researches.
At a "Teaching" university, would a conference on "Teaching Methods" be appropriate? Do you need official approval to attend a conference or do you choose you own conferences?
Yes, my institution certainly does. There is a fund that provides every permanent faculty member a set amount each year that they can spend on conferences. I submit an application at the beginning of each academic year demonstrating that the conferences I want funding for are relevant to my professional development. Since I try to get an expanded version of every conference paper published, the publicity the institution gets from the published versions makes the support a good return for its money.
