While performing cell-based assays to assess drug toxicity or drug efficacy, how is the initial cell seeding density determined? What is the standard followed in the pharmaceutical industry while performing screening assays in 96-well or 384-well plate?

My opinion is than the initial cell number is conditioned by the cell lines you are using fo your assay. All the cells have not the same growth/speed capacity. Therefore, you cannot used the same amount of cells for every cell lines. However, this number could be quite variable from an article to another. Consequently, the best way is to determine in your lab, the amount of cells to use for your experiment which could be guide by the litterature.
Thanks for the answer. Are you aware if there is a recommended starting cell number in the industry? If it is left up to the experimenter to decide the cell number, different number of cells will react differently to the same drug and affect the final readout.
I am not aware of what are the recommendations in the industry. But I suppose that they are the same than in academia. Most of the time, you realize a pre-test to know the number of cells necessary to have confluent cells at the time of the assay/exposition to the drug. It is why the number could vary from one strain to another
