Traditional media in many countries is controlled by large media corporations and partly also by governments of individual countries.
In contrast, on the Internet, in addition to typical news portals, new media are developing, including social media portals and independent internet forums, where citizens unconnected with corporations and large media companies have the opportunity to publicly express themselves and make their views public.
In this way, the Internet enables the potential increase of the level of objectivity and independence of the media.
Thanks to this, the issue of information dissemination and exchange of views, debates with citizens can be of a more social, civic and objective nature.

The news media online continues to be controlled by the those who control it offline. So, independence and objectivity, which are connected terms, remain almost the same as before. The social media is another matter, but it is hard to check its objectivity and independence too.
I think in my country the objectivity and independence of media are still controlled by those who have power over the media. and yes, I also agree with Avishag Gordon that the social media, online media is another matter. The freedom of speech in online media make the loads of information making its more confusing about the truth, hoax and objectivity.
My idea that Any government's don't have power for control to social media. But without in some places (continent of Africa or Asia) its look probably.
No, new media are also biased and influenced by politics, just as mudch as classic media.
In 'India' 'Freedom of Speech & Expression' is an inherent rights of citizens and reinforce 'Dignity' in population guaranteed under 'Article-19' of 'Constitution of India'
'Freedom of Press' is on professional plateform via aforementioned article & 'Subjective' in principle and promotes only 'Political' activities in most cases or 'Telecast' activities at per political directions in general in 'India'
'Internet' is doing real business as any common man any where in globe may express and instant reaction inculcate absolute 'Consciousness' in information system.

The development of the internet has come with it a huge problem. We have several cases of misinformation and disinformation. Objectivity here is relative but totally misplaced in Political stories
The complexities of the development of internet is we got several problem like lack information or overinformation which change our perspektif about "what's truth?"..sometimes objectifity more popular than reality..
everyone is a 'journalist or reporter' now. we can report or write anything on on line media without being strongly 'filtered' just like mainstream media. frequently the media are made/created by those who have hidden interests. furthermore, the rise of social media has made situation get worse due to creation of hoaxes or virtual lies. increasing independence? yes, to some extent. increasing level of objectivity? nope!

It is a doubled edged sword. It it gives freedom to commeners to keep traditional media accountable. The downside is that social media users do often abuse their new found freedoms to abuse them and promote falsehood.

In case of the Philippines, there exist a state-sponsored perpetration of disinformation. The government use social media influencers to sway the opinion of the uninformed Internet users. Worse, they create troll accounts to frame support to the administration.
@haji saediman, disinformation has become rampant in the Philippines when Duterte won the last presidential elections. Now that senatorial election is approaching, PDP are creating "fake" news against the opposition to mislead our voters.
In the case of Mexico, I'd say yes, not completely, but in certain degree and certainly not by itself, but added to other factors.
During the presidential term that just finished, the main political party lost a great deal of credibility due to scandals of corruption and, with it, the dominant media. As it became too obvious that the main TV networks were colluded with the corrupt government, audiences turned to independent networks that had been pushed to online transmitions after a long history of censorship. A good thing that the government did during that term, though, was to boost the extension of Internet infrastructure in the country. So by the end of the term, more than half the population had access to the independent networks and thus became a more critical audience. The best case to prove this is Aristegui Noticias, which is the most viewed news network currently, above any of the traditional media.
Nonetheless, the best term to describe it wouldn't be exactly 'objectivity' as it is known for a left-wing tendency. But it is, at least, more open to dialogue, discussion, transparency and diversity than any of the traditional networks.

Therefore, there is a growing risk of deliberate use of social media portals by specific organizations, large companies or national governments as an instrument for shaping general public opinion.
