I'm carrying out a study of glass system for controlled release glass and want to make sure the amount of chemical composition to be used is either set at 100% OR exceeds 100 by mass. My interest is to find the effect of Na2O addition in SiO2-B2O3--Na2O-Fe2O3 glass system by adjusting the amount of Na2O and the rest are fixed. So, is it possible to exceed 100% if I change the amount of Na2O in 5set of glass system with different amount of Na2O? For example :
Set 1 : SiO2 (45%), B2O3 (16%), Fe2O3 (25%), Na2O (14%) total 100%
Set 2 : SiO2 (45%), B2O3 (16%), Fe2O3 (25%), Na2O (24%) total 110
Set 3: SiO2 (45%), B2O3 (16%), Fe2O3 (25%), Na2O (34%) total 120
Hi I am not clear what you mean by this. If you are making a glass batch and using a carbonate as one of the constituents then your mass will exceed 100% of your composition mass as you will volatilise the CO2 during firing. However, if you are immersing a glass in a solvent then you could also have weight gain due to wetting - for example see A Meiszterics et al (2012) Study of bioactive calcium silicate ceramic systems for biomedical applications
hi Crowley. basically, my research is to prepare the glass system by using SiO2 (45%), B2O3(16%), Na2O (10%) and Fe2O3(29%). my question is, is it possible if the total amount of the composition exceed 100%. based on the jurnal that i have read, most of them set as 100% and only 1-2 researcher using more than 100% but they dont mention the reason.
Are you sure you don't mean to study the effects of changing the ratio of SiO2 and Na2O, I.e SiO2% + so Na2O% = 49%? Otherwise you are actually changing the relative amounts borax and Fe2O3. If I remember increasing the relative ratio of soda decreases the water stability of the glass, which seems to be your aim.
Thank you Myron. Actually i"m not sure to change either only amount of Na2O or both Na2O +Si2O..If only the Na2O changes..it will be more than 100% total composition in each set of glass system compared to changing both Na2O + Si2O... So which one is better????
I think maybe the confusion arises over the way you (and possibly some literature) is using "percentage." Percentage really can't exceed 100. If you only add soda to the recipe then you are decreasing the percentage of ALL of the other components, whereas what I'm suggesting only involves changing the relative amounts of silica and soda while the relative amounts of the borax and ferric oxide are constant.
I also believe the relative amount of borax may play a role. Have you ever been introduced to statistical design of experiments? If you have a good measurable characteristic (release rate of whatever?) I would suggest you consider running a factorial experiment to characterize the effects of both the soda and borax

Would give you main effects and interaction from a 5% change soda/borax composition.
I think it will exceeds 100% only if you used sodium carbonate to get sodium oxide Otherwise it is impossible to exceed 100%
thank you Hatem Maraqah.I use sodium carbonate instead of sodium oxide. then, I control the changes of sodium carbonate and magnesium oxide so that the total percentage composition does not exceed 100%. still acceptable right?

Your examples are erroneous and misleading. Set 1 shows the actual percentages of the individual components as oxides (the SiO4 structure is actually present as linked tetrahedra, three-dimensionally cross-bound by the cations into a 3-dimensional amorphous structure). Set-1 shows the % of each component but those of Set-2 & Set-3 need to be divided by 1.1 & 1.2 to show the actual percentage of each metal (and SiO2) content as oxides.
