We are aware of the discoloration of teeth by tetracycline administered during pregnancy and in young children. My question is, does tetracycline/doxycycline mouthrinse cause tooth discoloration?Any scientific studies/evidence on this please???
Thanks D. Callan. I am aware that it will not discolor teeth once they are formed. My real concern is whether tetracycline/doxycycline mouthrinse will cause discoloration at all. This is considering the fact of the low dose used in the mouthrinse.
About tetracycline/doxycycline mouthrinse. Thanks for your answer Dr. Nirmala. . Pls, do you have any publications or reference to support your answer that they will not cause discoloration? Pls, send them to me urgently. Or just give me the citation and I will find them. Urgent pls. Thanks!
Once amelogenesis & dentinogensis is done. TCN/DCN shouldn't interfere with the HAP crystals arrangement, No developmental anomalies involving the structure of enamel and dentine will develop and no intrinsic stains will develop.
Please go through this article. Might clear your doubts.
Thanks for your answers. The real issue here is that I am planning a study that will require the use of TCN/DCN mouthrinse in ptegnant women. Do you suggest then that we can safely use tetracycline/doxycycline mouthrinse in pregnant women? Pls support information with references.
Tetracycline based antibotics, which include Doxycycline, can greatly disfigure the teeth of children under the age of 10. Most times, it just shows up as staining and banding of the teeth, but in extreme cases, it can literally change the shape and structural composition of teeth. Above this age it usually does not stain the tooth.
I haven't yet seen an article addressing this topic, I could help you with articles on tetracycline antibiotics and its effect on teeth, anyway I will keep an eye out and post any favorable results I encounter regarding tetracycline mouthwash.
I have no experience with the TTC discoulorations but my clinical toughts do raise the question that swollowing low dose of TTC by a pregnant women might cause discolorations in the onborn child?
I do not know of any studies on staining. I did use tetracyclines ain periodontal pockets for awhile in the 1980s and do not recall any staining issues. I abandon this antibiotic use as in was ineffective topically and this may be why there are no studies. I do not see the point of putting tetracyclines,, any of them , in a mouthwash.
