Good coating material should have the property to absorb most of the impact energy in order to protect the underlying structure. Therefore,  Q damping coefficient should be very high.  After the impact there should be no appreciable damage underlying laminated structure,  or the amount damage done on the laminate after the impact should be  between the limits of tolerance. Most armed vehicles they have laminated structures having members  with various thermomechanical properties. For this type of applications one uses network  of carbon fibers embedded in highly plastic substrate just to hold the structure. Best example comes from nature such as Turtle Shell structure.
