Kemal Ersayin R will automatically create dummy variables if the variable is a factor. However, if you wanted to dummy code variables manually, you can do so using the ifelse() function as shown here:

Nothing in R seems to be 'automatic' but creating factors is easy:

EXPRESSION:

factor(letters[4:1])

RESULT:

[1] d c b a

Levels: a b c d
