Studies have demonstrated that leaves carbon isotope discrimination (CID) negatively correlated with plant water use efficiency. In my study leaf CID was positively correlated with WUE?Is it because of photosynthesis was measured on a small subsample of leaves over a short period and it is not represent the whole plant or the whole growing period?Need explanations from the experts.
WUE is often used for differents meanings and circumstances. On the same genotype a change in air humiditycan modify transpiration without any profit for carbon uptake and discrimination during growth does not reflect daily sugar exchange after weeks from structural cellulose build up. Graham Farquhar and his team (CSIRO) did lots of work on isotope discrimination (field crops) and TE or WUE. Blum, Fischer, Rebetzki, and few others also discussed about the relationship between CID & TE or WUE for breeding and the +ves and -ves. The definition of WUE is important to understand the relationship between other parameters.
CID and WUE relationship is reported + and - both type of relationship in a number of C3 species including legumes under drought Stress. But we the learned researchers unable tell us what was the number of sample size in determination of relationship. Relationship is mathematically derived result it can be positive and negative both in same species. See a lot of work by Dr. Abraham Blum, Dr. N. C. Turner, Dr. Farquhar etc.
