I want to synthesize mesoporous carbon shell encapsulated magnetic nanoparticle to be used as MRI contrast agent. For this, the whole system should be water soluble so that it can be used inside the body. I want to know whether mesoporous carbon shell is soluble in water. If it is not, can any functionalization make it soluble?
Mostly carbon materials are hydrophobic unless they have hydrophilic functional groups like –COOH, -OH, etc… You can do controlled oxidation of carbon with HNO3 acids. But, I think this can dissolve magnetic metal particle as well.
Even if the carbon material is hydrophilic perhaps you will have to see if it will provide a stable dipsersion and for how long period. Normally, since you want to apply the carbon material inside the body you need an aqueous stability for about a month. In case your carbon shell is hydrophibic or is not stable you need biocompatible hydrophilic polymers to be covalently or non covalently conjugated in the surface of the carbon shell.
