We are often talking about martensite, however, martensite is as far as I know never listed as phase in a database like ICSD. Asking metal physists they told me many years ago that martensite is a actually a microstructure, (possibly like bainite ?) characterized by a high defect density. Nowadays, martensitic transformations have been identifies in different materials which are not related at all to iron. Therefore my question: What is martensite? If it is a phase, why we cannot find it in databases? If it is not a phase, why do we use it like a phase? Does it match the definition of a phase?
